Talking forensics with Suffolk DA Ray Tierney
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, whose team helped lead to an arrest in the decade-old Gilgo Beach murder case, spoke to students from 糖心Vlog High School East and West on Monday morning.
The presentation, held at High School East, was attended by students enrolled in Forensics, Project Lead The Way, and Criminal Justice courses. Mr. Tierney, who was sworn in as Suffolk County District Attorney on January 1, 2022, shared insights into the investigation and how his team ultimately identified suspect Rex Heuermann. He noted that once his task force was assembled, it took approximately 72 days to narrow in on the suspect, despite the case remaining unsolved for more than 11 years.
“When you start working on a puzzle, you start with the easiest piece,” Tierney explained. “The easiest piece for us was the Gilgo Four.”
District Attorney Tierney has served as a prosecutor for nearly 30 years at both the state and federal levels, bringing extensive experience to one of Long Island’s most high-profile investigations.
Thank you to High School East Principal Paul McNeil, science teacher Steve Gessler, and Director of Science Dr. Stephanie O’Brien for organizing this special learning opportunity for our students.
